Buying guides · October 2026
The best iPhone for you.
Each guide ranks every iPhone Apple sells on the few figures that matter for one kind of buyer, with the weights shown, then adds what reviewers concluded. Apple sells 7 iPhones new right now, from iPhone 17e at $699 to iPhone Duo at $1,999; below is the pick for each kind of buyer and how we got there.
Method
How we pick.
There is no single best iPhone: a phone that suits a grandparent is the wrong phone for a photographer. So each guide answers one question with a calculation anyone can check.
- Start with every iPhone Apple sells new (iPhone 17e, iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo). Older models appear only as second-hand suggestions.
- Choose the figures that matter to that buyer, such as screen size, battery, price and weight for seniors, or rear cameras and zoom for photography, and give each a weight. The weights always add up to 100%.
- Scale each figure from the worst phone in the table (0) to the best (1), so a gram and a dollar can be added together fairly.
- Add up the weighted figures into a score out of 100 and rank by it; on a tie, the cheaper phone goes first.
- Add judgement and reviews. Our advice is written from the figures, and we paraphrase what Macworld, TechRadar and iPhone in Canada concluded, with a link to each review.

- Under $800: iPhone 17e ($699) or iPhone 16 ($799). iPhone 17e is the better buy: it costs less, has a newer chip and starts at 256 GB.
- $800 to $1,000: iPhone 17 ($899), which adds a 120 Hz screen and an ultra wide camera over iPhone 17e. Compare them: iPhone 17e vs iPhone 17 →
- $1,000 to $1,500: iPhone Air ($1,099), iPhone 18 Pro ($1,199), iPhone 18 Pro Max ($1,299). The Pros are the camera picks; iPhone Air is the thinnest and lightest of the three but has one rear camera.
- Over $1,500: iPhone Duo ($1,999), the folding iPhone with a 7.6-inch inner screen. It is the heaviest iPhone at 254 g and the most expensive, so it does not top any of the guides.
FAQ
Questions people ask
- How do you pick the best iPhone for each type of buyer?
- Each guide takes every iPhone Apple sells new (7 models in October 2026), picks the three to five figures that matter to that buyer, scales each figure from the worst to the best phone, weights them and adds them up to a score out of 100. The weights are shown on every guide. Figures come from Apple's technical specifications and US prices from apple.com.
- What is the cheapest iPhone worth buying?
- iPhone 17e, from $699. It ranks first in our budget guide, where only iPhones under $900 take part and price counts for half the score.
- Which iPhone has the best camera?
- iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which tie on our camera score: three 48MP rear cameras and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. The cheapest iPhone on sale with an ultra wide camera is iPhone 16 at $799.
- Which iPhone is best for seniors?
- iPhone 17e ranks first on screen, battery, price and weight, just ahead of iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro Max; the scores are within a few points. For the biggest screen without folding, iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display.
- What is the smallest iPhone you can buy new?
- iPhone 17e, at 146.7 × 71.5 mm and 169 g. Apple no longer sells an iPhone mini; iPhone 13 mini was the last one.
- Why does iPhone 17e win so many of the guides?
- It is the cheapest iPhone on sale ($699), one of the narrowest and lightest, and has a current A19-family chip, so it does well wherever price, size or weight count. It has one rear camera and a 60 Hz screen, which is why it ranks near the bottom of the camera guide.
- How often are these rankings updated?
- The scores are recalculated from our model data every time the site is rebuilt, so they change as soon as we update a price or add a model. Prices and specs were last checked in October 2026.
