The best iPhone for seniors
Which iPhone is best for seniors? iPhone 17e ($699), on the figures below. For most older users the things that matter are a screen big enough to read, a battery that lasts more than a day, a fair price and a phone that is not heavy to hold. We rank every iPhone Apple sells on exactly those four figures.
The ranking
The contenders, scored.
| # | iPhone | Screen | Battery (video) | Price | Weight | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | iPhone 17e | 6.1″ | 26 h | $699 | 169 g | 53 |
| 2 | iPhone 17 | 6.3″ | 30 h | $899 | 177 g | 52 |
| 3 | iPhone 18 Pro Max | 6.9″ | 45 h | $1,299 | 249 g | 50 |
| 4 | iPhone Air | 6.5″ | 27 h | $1,099 | 165 g | 49 |
| 5 | iPhone 16 | 6.1″ | 22 h | $799 | 170 g | 44 |
| 6 | iPhone 18 Pro | 6.3″ | 36 h | $1,199 | 211 g | 34 |
iPhone Duo is left out: at 254 g it is the heaviest iPhone, it costs $1,999, and unfolding it adds a step to every task.
How the score works: each figure is scaled from the worst to the best phone in the table, then weighted (screen 30%, battery (video) 20%, price 30%, weight 20%) and added up to 100. Figures from Apple's technical specifications; US prices from apple.com, checked October 2026.
Our advice
What we'd buy.
- iPhone 17e comes first on the figures, with iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro Max close behind: the scores are within a few points, so choose by what matters most to the person using it.
- For the biggest screen without folding, iPhone 18 Pro Max (6.9 inches, up to 45 hours of video) is the one to get, if the 249 g weight and the price are not a problem.
- A bigger screen helps, but so do settings: turn on Display Zoom and Larger Text (below) and even a 6.1-inch iPhone shows big, clear text.

Not sold new, but worth a look
- iPhone 16 Plus: a 6.7-inch screen and long battery life without Pro Max weight, if you can find one refurbished.
Set it up
- Display Zoom (Settings › Display & Brightness › Display Zoom) makes icons, buttons and text larger everywhere at once.
- Larger Text (Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size) goes beyond the normal text-size slider.
- Assistive Access (Settings › Accessibility) replaces the home screen with a simplified layout of large buttons for calls, messages, camera and photos.
- Every iPhone on sale has Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite, according to Apple’s spec pages.

Their picks, in our words.
Macworld · Oct 2026
Macworld’s pick for older users is iPhone 17e: a simple feature set, modern performance and strong battery life at a lower price. It advises against iPhone Air, the Pro Max and Duo for older users: the Air gives up battery and camera flexibility, and the other two are heavy and expensive.

For everyday use you likely won't feel a huge difference; the 17's gains are a 48MP ultrawide, an 18MP Center Stage selfie camera and a brighter screen.
iPhone 17 vs. iPhone 16: Should You Upgrade? ↗GSMArena · Dec 2025
The iPhone 17 is close enough for most people (same 120 Hz screen, ultrawide and selfie cameras, lighter body); the Pro still earns its price with the 4x telephoto, faster chip and pro video features.

If you already own an iPhone 16 you can keep it, but if you're upgrading from something older there is no reason to choose the 16 over the 17.

A head-versus-heart call: the base iPhone 17 is no longer an entry-level compromise, while the 17 Pro adds sustained performance and better cooling.
