Do not plan to buy an iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro Max by simply walking into an Apple Store in Japan or South Korea. Apple’s local iPhone pages currently restrict those purchases. Check the online ordering and pickup options for your exact model before making the trip.
For a buyer choosing between the two phones, this changes the timing decision: switching from Duo to Pro Max does not remove the announced store-purchase restriction in either country. It does not tell you which device will arrive sooner.
What Apple has confirmed
We checked Apple’s Japanese and South Korean iPhone pages on October 19, 2026. The notices name both iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
| Market | What the local Apple notice says | What to do before visiting |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | For a limited period, the two models cannot be bought at an Apple Store without a reservation. | Confirm a reservation for the exact model and store; do not rely on a walk-in purchase. |
| South Korea | The two models currently cannot be bought on a walk-in basis. Apple directs shoppers to order online for delivery or Apple Store pickup. | Check the online store for the delivery or pickup options actually offered for your configuration. |
Neither notice supplies a date when unrestricted walk-in purchasing will resume. A pickup option in the shopping flow is not a promise that every configuration or store has stock. Treat the confirmation for your own order as the relevant evidence.
Should you switch to the Pro Max to get a phone sooner?
The notices alone do not support that decision. Both models are named, so a Pro Max is not an announced workaround for the Duo restriction. Compare the actual fulfillment options shown for each configuration instead of assuming that a non-folding phone is immediately available.
If the phones suit different needs, keep those differences in the decision. The Duo versus 18 Pro Max comparison shows their dimensions and specifications. A confirmed pickup date may matter more if your current phone has failed; someone with a working phone can compare the waiting time against the benefits of the model they actually want.
The notices do not name the smaller iPhone 18 Pro. That omission does not establish its availability: check its own ordering options before choosing it as an alternative.
If you are buying during a trip
Do not book non-refundable travel specifically for an unconfirmed store purchase. Your relevant total is the phone’s actual local checkout price plus any travel costs and applicable taxes or import charges. These notices establish no price saving and do not provide enough information to calculate a cross-border bargain.
Before committing to a purchase abroad, check the exact regional model’s carrier compatibility and the warranty or service terms that apply where you will use it. Those are separate checks; a store reservation does not answer them.
If you already have an order, check its status and the seller’s cancellation terms before placing another one. Do not cancel a confirmed order just because another page offers a pickup search, and avoid selling or trading away your only working phone before replacement timing is confirmed.
What remains unknown
The two official notices do not explain the cause of the restriction, quantify inventory, promise delivery dates or set an end date. We therefore do not attribute the policy to scalping or a particular production problem. Reports of individual orders moving forward also do not establish that new buyers can obtain the same dates.
These are country-specific notices. They do not establish a walk-in policy for the United States or any other market, and they do not establish the rules of independent retailers or carriers. Recheck the local Apple page and your own order confirmation before visiting.
